Paul R. Brakeman, MD, PhD

Dr. Paul R. Brakeman is medical director of the UCSF Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program. He specializes in evaluating and treating pediatric dialysis patients and pediatric kidney transplant patients, as well as children with conditions including recurrent urinary tract infections, chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome (marked by symptoms of kidney damage, such as too much protein in the urine) and obstructive nephropathy (a problem with urine flow that affects kidney function).

Brakeman's research is focused on the engineering of renal epithelial cells (the cells that line nephrons, the kidney's functional units) for a bioartificial kidney and also on developing three-dimensional culture systems to study kidney toxicology and injury in the lab.

Brakeman earned his medical degree and doctorate through a combined program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At UCSF, he completed a residency in pediatrics, serving as chief resident, followed by a fellowship in pediatric nephrology.
