Dr. Hanna, who specializes in treating gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and soft tissue sarcoma, is head of Surgical Oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Previously at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, he served as director of gastrointestinal clinical research at the Lucille Markey Cancer Center and associate professor of surgery.

He received his medical degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, in 1985; completed his surgical residency at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Tufts University; and completed two fellowships at the University of Chicago. He is board-certified in general surgery and surgical oncology.

His research interests include using adenovirus-mediated gene therapy and genetic radiotherapy to treat cancer.
