Study shows potential to prevent hospitalizations in brain tumor patients

In this video, author Derek R. Johnson, M.D., a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, says changing certain practices will prevent some of the late hospitalizations associated with brain tumor patients, which will be good for patients and provide significant cost savings. Dr. Johnson says, "People wish to avoid hospitalization. They want to spend time in their home, with their families, and maintain as much dignity and peace as possible." In a retrospective five-year study, researchers at Mayo Clinic found that common causes of hospitalization for patients with malignant brain tumors, such as seizures, are potentially preventable. Researchers hope to use the findings to promote changes in certain practices that may help to prevent seizures.
