International Cardiac Surgeons Discuss Global Collaboration | Penn Medicine

The North American Aortic Valve Repair Symposium at Penn Medicine has attracted surgeons from Europe and Canada since its inception. At the 4th Annual Symposium, a group of intercontinental cardiothoracic surgeons, including Drs. Laurent De Kerchove, Munir Boodhwani, and Hans-Joachim Schäfers, were asked about the value of collaboration among international surgeons to the practice of aortic valve repair and the patient population.

The surgeons’ answers, which ranged from an overview of evolving classification systems for aortic surgery to the benefits of swarm intelligence, offer an invaluable glimpse of perspectives and attitudes outside of the United States on the perceived benefits of collaboration as a means to better define the intricacies of aortic repair.
