Assessing and managing stroke risk in adult congenital heart disease

Mayo Clinic cardiologists Naser M. Ammash, M.D., and Christopher J. McLeod, M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D., discuss how to assess stroke risk in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). For more information on ACHD or to schedule an appointment, visit here..

Compared to the general population, adults with congenital heart disease have an increased risk of stroke. Atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and heart failure are the most common risk factors. People with ACHD who are at a high risk of stroke are oftentimes prescribed warfarin or another anticoagulant. Stroke risk is different in all patients, so follow-up with an expert in this area is important.
