Minimally Invasive Brain Aneurysm Repair

Endovascular embolization (or coiling) is a newer, minimally invasive treatment option for patients who have been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm -- which is a weak bulging spot on the wall of a brain artery. The procedure takes about two hours and patients are typically able to go home the following day.

During the procedure, the physician inserts a catheter into the patient’s groin and threads it through blood vessels into the brain using x-ray guidance. Through the catheter, the physician uses another tube to deposit platinum coils to fill the aneurysm, blocking blood flow to the aneurysm and preventing a rupture. This is a potentially life-saving treatment for aneurysms that were previously considered inoperable and it is the preferred method to treat cerebral aneurysms. The traditional approach to treat cerebral aneurysms, which involves opening the skull and repairing an aneurysm by blocking blood flow from the artery with a metal clip at the base of the aneurysm, is also discussed in the webcast.
