George Therapondos, MD

Dr. George Therapondos is currently the Hepatology Section Head at the Ochsner MultiOrgan Transplant Institute. He received his medical training at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. He received his specialist certification in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and underwent clinical research training at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Toronto, Canada. He also completed a Master in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

He was director of the Clinical Trials Unit of the Multi-organ Transplant Program of the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada and worked as Assistant Professor and Staff Hepatologist at Toronto General Hospital. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and has continued to serve as a journal and grant reviewer for multiple journals and grant awarding bodies.

He has published on advanced liver disease and its complications, such as portal hypertension and cirrhotic cardiomyopathy. More recently, his research interests have focused on adult deceased and living donor liver transplantation and quality of life issues in liver patients.
