The 2024 Smidt Heart Institute Annual Report is now available.

The Smidt Heart Institute continues to break new ground in cardiovascular research and care. It is a global leader in heart transplant, women's heart disease, targeted therapies and a suite of minimally invasive procedures. The institute achieves some of the best outcomes in the nation for the most complex and challenging cases.

Clinical and research highlights from this year's report include:

  • Cardiac Surgery: With the highest quality rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Smidt Heart Institute's surgeons are among the most experienced in the world, performing more than 1,500 robotic mitral valve repairs with a near 100% success rate. The institute is home to the largest structural heart program in the U.S., and its surgeons have deep expertise in Ross procedures, aortic aneurysm repair, and valve-sparing root replacement and repair.
  • Interventional Cardiology: The Smidt Heart Institute's interventional cardiology experts are highly skilled in all structural heart procedures and have performed more transcatheter aortic valve replacements than any other U.S. center. The institute is one of only a few centers excelling in percutaneous and surgical care for all four heart valves.
  • Heart Transplant: The Smidt Heart Institute has one of the largest heart transplant programs in the U.S., with more than 1,600 transplants performed to date. Its specialists provide novel therapeutic options to reduce organ rejection, and they are experts in transplants for complex patients bridged from mechanical circulatory support.
  • Congenital Heart: The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program at the Smidt Heart Institute is one of only 50 programs in the nation to receive the prestigious ACHD Accredited Comprehensive Care Center designation. The program's experts provide seamless, comprehensive care from intrauterine life through adulthood, even for the most complex congenital heart disorders.
  • Vascular Surgery: Vascular specialists at the Smidt Heart Institute are highly skilled in minimally invasive and complex open aortic surgery, transcarotid artery revascularization, limb salvage, and minimally invasive treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.
