CHD Surgical Team Exceeds National Average Outcomes for Pediatric and Adult Patients

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect in the U.S. Due to medical breakthroughs and progress in treatment, there is a large population of adults with congenital heart disease. Currently, there are more than one million adults in the United States living with this disease, and this number continues to rise each year.

Overall, adult congenital heart disease patients who receive surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center have significantly better outcomes than those treated at other hospitals nationwide, according to the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS). Pediatric congenital heart disease patients at University of Maryland Medical Center also fare better when compared to other hospitals nationwide, according to the STS.
