Generation of Rate-Tuned Pediatric Biological Pacemaker Tissue Constructs from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

Misato Koakutsu, cardiac research fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, discusses the development of pacemaker and surrounding cells that can be injected directly into a patient’s heart. This was the topic of her presentation during the Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. A research team generated these cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) to mimic in vivo pacemaker tissue. With pediatric patients having limitations regarding device implantation, the hiPSC-derived biological pacemakers could help overcome this issue.
