Matthew Smyth, M.D., chief of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Division at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, summarizes his presentation at the hospital’s Pediatric Brain Symposium.
Hi, I'm Doctor Matthew Smith. I'm the division chief of pediatric neurosurgery here at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in Saint Petersburg, Florida. I've been here for 2 to 3 years now and um well, I've had many opportunities over my career in the past 20 years or so to speak at national conferences. Uh for example, the AA NS, the CNS, the joint pediatric section, the Neurosurgical Society of America about techniques uh such as uh epilepsy surgery. Um It was particularly rewarding to be invited to speak here at our local and regional conference, our pediatric brain symposium, which took place in November of 2023. Uh That symposium was very well attended. And uh one of the sessions we focused on was epilepsy surgery. Um Looking at patient care from the nursing standpoint, from the team's standpoint surgical techniques and then uh outcomes and rehabilitation. And I focused on the surgical techniques um incorporating minimally invasive technologies such as stereo eeg laser ablation using uh uh minimally invasive approaches, placing fibers with robotic assistance um and avoiding craniotomies to try and control seizures in these kids. And it was rewarding to speak to a local audience, but we also had attendees from the region, from the nation and even a large cohort came internationally. Um And we were happy to share our team's techniques and successes with the attendees. And it was a great conference. It was very well attended. I mean, we're very proud of it. Thank you.
