What’s New in Hemorrhagic Shock

Trauma surgeon Patrick Kim, MD, offers a practical perspective on bleeding control and prevention of hemorrhagic shock in both the field and trauma bay. Dr. Kim’s presentation contains considerations of improved long-term survival with the rapid application of tranexamic acid (TXA) therapy; thromboelastography (TEG) to determine abnormal blood components in the wake of trauma; trauma exsanguination protocols for massive transfusion; newer concepts in hemostatic resuscitation; retrograde endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta; and in the near future, freeze-dried plasma and self-expanding foams for tamponade.
